Next Show
April 26-28, 2017

Focus
ASDS is a tri-service (Land, Air, Sea) defense exhibition with the attached conference, covering weaponry, vehicles, homeland security and the associated kit.

Dress
Business attire and working uniforms, although many attendees are in casual civilian attire.

Show Food
The show catering is excellent for the delegates’ rooms, but the restaurant is simply a small sandwich/pastry line where you can also order Wiener schnitzel, sausages, burgers and fries. Water, soda, wine are all available there and the staff keeps water in coolers around the show.

Hotel Hints
The old “Lav” hotel was rebuilt into Le Meridien-Lav and is a very nice hotel. It is about the only western chain hotel in Split and it is about 20 minutes from the Spaladium where the show is. There are many private hotels, but use caution if you’re not “adventuresome” and make sure the hotel meets your needs.

Power & Plug types
220 volt, 50 cycle using European two-prong plugs.

Country Warnings
The Bosnian War is long gone, but there is still some inter-religious tension, good to avoid commenting on those events. Croatian cities are generally safe, but the nightlife has its hazards like most places. Ask your concierge where “Not to go” and listen. There are hidden hazards like being served champagne without asking, and being charged large amounts – basically tourist traps, so pay attention to where you go.

Cultural Hints
Croatians tend to be friendly and outgoing, but closed off a bit in smaller communities. Split is a beautiful Adriatic city, with a lot of Italian influence. Most people will be helpful to tourists.

Tipping
10-15% in most upscale restaurants, round up taxi fares, and tipping is appreciated but not expected in most smaller restaurants. Pay attention to the “Couvert” charge on menus; it’s a “bread charge” and it may be 5-35 Kuna depending. This is not a tip or service charge, and if the bread is on your table, you pay the Couvert.

Currency
Croatia is probably moving to the Euro in 2016-17, but today it uses the Croatian Kuna HRK. In our experience, the Kuna was used most places, but the Euro was also quoted by taxis, etc. At press time, 1.00 HRK = $0.19; €0.135; ₤0.117; ¥15.48. For current currency quotes, go to www.xe.com/ucc

Getting Around
Driving is on the right side of the road, driver seated on the left, in the U.S. or European fashion. Car rentals are available for those who are more confident, but if you’re in the city, taxis are reasonable and easy to use. Get your hotel’s business card with Croatian writing for where you want to go and return, for the cab drivers who don’t speak your language. Public transport is readily available, if you understand how to use it. Show management runs buses to and from the large hotels on show days.

Military Museums
The Croatian Maritime Museum (in Croatian: Hrvatski pomorski muzej) at Glagoljaška 18 – Tvrđava Gripe is inside Gripe Fortress. This museum displays historical sea related items as well as various weaponry.

Tourism
This beautiful coastal city gives access to many tourist areas, from the mountains for hiking to cruises around the Adriatic. The “Old Town” area is a medieval walled city and a large multi-block walking area filled with shopping and restaurants. Try Pizzeria Galija for the Croatian take on Italian cuisine, and Konoba Izvor for excellent home-cooked Croatian meals. Call ahead to arrange a meal +358 (0) 210472-020 ask for Natali. www.croatia.hr/en-GB/Homepage
